Psychotherapy

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy, or counselling, is a working relationship between you and your therapist. The goals of counselling will be set by you and your psychologist. Generally, clients are looking for relief from their emotional issues, strategies for coping, and a plan for healthy living.  Sessions are usually 45 to 50 minutes in length. Your therapist will listen, take notes, and offer input.

How can counselling help me?

Sometimes people are too close to their problems to see them clearly and handle them effectively. Counselling provides a secure and confidential professional relationship that helps you to see your situation differently. You will be encouraged to work through your upsetting thoughts and feelings. You will also be taught coping skills so that you can feel better emotionally and have positive relationships with others.

What should I expect at the first session?

At the first session, you will talk with a psychologist or therapist about your concerns, your background, and your psychotherapy goals. You will also be able to ask questions you might have about counselling. Usually at the end of the first session, your therapist will outline his/her impression and make recommendations for treatment.
